Fair Warning: I really only talk about football (Arsenal and SJ Earthquakes), hockey (Sharks), baseball (Giants), and pop culture (Mainly british TV shows and such). All the time. Just, you know, warning you. To be fair. Because I spam hockey and Arsenal FC almost daily.
Q. This is kind of a long question, but I’ve really wanted to start a healthy lifestyle, not only for me, but for my family. My dad is clinically obese and a diabetic, but he won’t listen to my mom or me about diet and exercise. So, my question is, are there any books or documentaries or websites that you would recommend for my dad to look into to motivate him? I also live in a town that doesn’t have any real health food stores like Whole Foods, and my parents both work full-time.
A: I completely understand. This is what you need to do. Have your dad watch a few of the food documentaries floating around. Do FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD first—-the title is off putting, but I promise, it is an amazing film that will truly inspire your dad (and you and your family as well!). The two main stars of the documentary are overweight and sick and on medication and by the end of the film are both healthy and off their meds. Now here is the thing. Your dad won’t like feeling forced into watching this film, like he HAS to do it. But if you just sit down in the living room one night (make sure he is there) and start watching it, he will not be able to not watch it. Make it so its his decision to watch, he will be much more open to the idea. Some other films to watch after that are: Forks Over Knives, Food Matters, Hungry For Change & Food Inc. If you can just get him to watch the film it may save his life. all of those movies I have mentioned are free on Netflix or are easily rent-able on itunes for a couple bucks. <3
I made my mother watch this with me tonight and she instantly decided she wanted to buy a juicer and do a fast with me. She threw away all her food with HFCS, she cleared our cabinets of all her bad food and asked if she could eat some of my raw foods for a few days until payday, and I just sat in awe and wonder trying to not cry because I’m so proud and so moved by her/this.
After prepping my beans, prepping my veggies, and prepping the spices…I now smell like a walking chili pepper. And my house smells like HEAVEN with all the cayan, cumin, and oregano that is in this. I need to go to culinary school or something so I can learn to make my house smell this good all the time. Shit.
